After hiking Mt. Le Conte earlier in the day, I drove to a not-so-secret overlook along Newfound Gap Road to shoot sunset. It was cloudy and raining on and off; my expectations were low.
But the dark overhead clouds seemingly never made it to the horizon. Once the sun dropped below them, the entire valley was flooded with golden light. I sat in the rain and shot for at least 90 minutes, as the mist dancing along the mountains was ever changing.

There’s no question that Craggy Pinnacle is a great place to catch sunset (or sunrise, for that matter). I took this picture in June of 2024, when the Strawberry Moon was making its appearance. But Craggy wanted to show us an amazing sunset before the moon came out.

I’ll be honest- when I drove down to Pisgah National Forest the day this shot was taken, I had one goal- to shoot the beautiful fall foliage. However, when I arrived, the trees were mostly bare with very little color left.
Imagine my surprise when I walked the staircase down to Looking Glass Falls, I was greeted with a sea of vibrant orange leaves right at the base of the falls.
